Шаг в весну

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another edition of Loose Watercolours! What’s been going on this week, you ask? Well, lots of painting, especially now the sun’s decided to come out. It’s finally warm enough to practice a spot of пленэр out in the garden, which is the perfect way to spend a spring afternoon.

It was lovely to see all of your ‘Valentine’s Roses’ from last week’s broadcast – I’ve been very impressed by all of your delicate florals. This week’s live broadcast is ‘Tulips’, and it’ll be on later this week, so keep your eyes peeled. You can join in the fun by following the link here: https://loosewatercolours.com/live-broadcast/

If you love painting flowers, don’t worry! There’s also another tutorial available over on Patreon this week. ‘Simple Flower’ is an easy little floral, just perfect for beginners to the loose style. So why not give it a go? You can follow the link here to watch along: https://www.patreon.com/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours

In other news this week, I ran a workshop for the Muskham Art Group, which was very fun. In fact, the day was made extra special as there were some delicious cakes on offer as well – an absolute must when settling down for a paint. We all had a great time painting in the loose style, and we even had a prize draw to win two of the paintings that I created on the day! Here are our lucky winners below.

And here’s a close up of the bee in question.

Wait! What’s that? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Toby the dog, bounding into our Substack this week to give you a few tips and tricks in the loose watercolour style! So have a watch along and see what he’s got to say!

And that’s not all in terms of tutorials this week! We’re carrying on our weekly Watercolour Basics series with a look at how water affects paint. Essential, as you’d think, for the watercolour style.

Watercolour Basics #10: How Water Affects Paint

So, as always, watch this video through a few times to really get the gist of it, then give it a go yourself!

This week, I also tried a bit of an experiment when it came to my own practice. I’ve spent years painting with watercolours, and sometimes you just think, what if? So I thought I’d give some ‘loose acrylics’ a go! So I painted a lemon tree (I clearly can’t wait until summer) with acrylics, playing fast and loose with all the colours. What do you think? Do you like it? Do you think it worked? Sometimes it can be fun to experiment a little – after all, that’s what the loose style is all about – putting paint to paper just to see what works!

A loose acrylic this week.

And what about a nice treat to spruce up your painting now that the sun’s come out? If you fancy upgrading your painting set up, you can get your very own set of the Loose Gang here: https://loosewatercolours.com/product-category/loose-gang/

That’s all from me this week, as I’m off to enjoy the nice weather and take Toby for a walk round the village. This week, the subject is ‘Snowdrops in Blue’, and I hope you all enjoy painting along!

Until next time, though, that’s it from Toby and I, and we’ll be back in your inbox very soon. In the meantime, have a lovely week, and happy painting!
