Heerlijk februari

Hello everyone, and welcome to another week of Loose Watercolours! I may have got a little bit excited about spring a little te early last week, as we’ve had a bit of a cold snap here. Ah well – all the more excuses to stay inside with a hot cuppa and a paintbrush. And don’t forget the biscuits!

It was great to see so many of you for last Monday’s live broadcast, ‘Blossom Walk.’ I hope you all enjoyed creating a pleasant spring scene surrounded by some beautiful blossoming trees. It’s almost as good as seeing the actual cherry blossom season in Japan, but slightly cheaper on air fare.

For those of you who follow and support me on my Patreon channel, we have a fun new tutorial for you to try. Flower is a beginner’s tutorial that gently guides you through the loose way of painting. Its ‘Simple Purple Flower’ handy for those of you who are just taking your first steps on this wonderful watercolour journey!

There was also another live broadcast on Patreon last week, where we painted ‘Bonny’ the dog. This was a request from member Dina, as Bonny is a school greeter dog for severely disabled children in Minnesota, USA, and she brings everyone joy when she woofs hello to them in the morning! Bonny is a very friendly dog, so of course, it was great fun to paint along to!

I got out and about this week despite the cold, and I found myself painting in a coffee shop this week. I was given a nice little watercolour sketchbook for Christmas, so I thought I’d try it out in the wild – with a nice cake to pair it with as well, of course. It made a lovely stop on my journey, and it was nice to break up a long leg of travelling with a spot of painting and a bite to eat. I’m particularly pleased with how the colours turned out!

A paint and a spot of lunch.

Watercolour Basics #10: Negative Painting

This week, I thought we’d continue our Watercolour Basics series by taking a look at something you may have heard me talk about a lot in different tutorials – negative painting. Negative painting is

Historisch Wells & Somerset schilderen: September 2025

The four days, which includes full accommodation at the Swan Hotel in Wells, as well as personalised tuition in both studio work and plein air painting.

That’s all from me this week, as it’s starting to get a little chilly in here – I’m off to find another couple of blankets to keep out the cold. As always, though, there’s an extra exclusive tutorial included at the end of this Substack as an extra special thank you to all of you paid subscribers. Your generosity is what keeps this Substack running, and for that, I couldn’t be more grateful. So I hope you enjoy painting along to ‘Florals on Check (Wash & Line)’ this week. I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Until next time, though, it’s goodbye from me and Toby the dog, and have a lovely week. I’ll be back in your inboxes very soon, but until next time, happy painting!
