What sort of paint is recommended please? Is there a tutorial on just paints? I am new to this and have only got a kids paint set. I don’t want to buy something and then find out I got the wrong type of paint.

    • Hi, Andrew has a basic set of hues he uses, mostly Winsor and Newton Cotman, some Sennelier. The usual hues (W&N unless marked): lemon yellow, cadmium orange, cerulean blue or Sennelier Royal Blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, sap green, turquoise, perylene green, rose opera, cadmium red, alizarine crimson, indian red, mauve (a reddish purple), purple (a deep purple). Basically, to start, a light and dark of yellow, red, blue, green. He’ll sometimes add in other hues based on what he’s got; he always encourages to use what you have.

A set of Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolor paints is usually an affordable starting paint, and recommended for Andy’s tutorials. Andy uses tubes and shows how he sets out the paint. They have the same pigment as professional but less pigment load so it’s not so overwhelming to manage. Beyond that, Winsor and Newton Professional, Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Schmincke, and Holbein are excellent paints and affordable pricing may vary based On country.

        • Yes, in fact he states that he uses mostly W-N artist or sometimes Newton Cotman paints and only on occasion uses DS paints! I think that is great for us casual painters!!
